Inca Quarry Trail

INCA QUARRY TRAIL 1 DAY HIKE

The Inca Quarry Trail from Ollantaytambo is a new route that visits the ancient stone quarry and the Sungate in one day. The Quarry Trail of the incas was used to transport the rocks to built the Inca City of Ollantaytambo. There are many cut stones—known as “tired stones”—still remain in the ancient Inca Quarry. They have never made it to the sacred valley of the incas. These carved stones were possibly abandoned, which makes the area even more enigmatic and fascinating to visit.

The Inca Quarry Trail also shows the burial stone towers that probably housed the rest of the ancient stonecutters. The path winds up the hill, passing groups of stone houses to Inti Punku (Sun Gate). Delight yourself as you enjoy the remote Inca ruins and the spectacular Andean views. Most importantly, the Inca Quarry Trail is the newest and the least crowded route that begins and ends in Ollantaytambo. If you wish this can be organized with connection to Machu Pichu by train at night.

Itinerary & Map

INCA QUARRY TRAIL FROM OLLANTAYTAMBO 1 DAY

We will pick you up from the hotel in Cusco at 6:00 am on our private transport and drive for about 1.5 hours to Ollantaytambo. We will take a scenic journey through the plains or Chinchero and get down to the Sacred Valley until we reach Ollantaytambo, known as the “living Inca village”. After getting ready and buying our bottles of water, we will begin our Inca Quarry trail hike.

We will have the chance to cross over the ancient Inca Bridge, and hike up the original trail up the hill enjoying the valley from the opposite direction. There are a few groups of houses along the way and some tired stones that can be used as benches to get some rest. After 3 hours of hike, we can finally see the first stone quarry. There are 2 Inca stone quarry sites, a lower one and a higher one. Our hike continues for 30 more minutes to reach the second stone quarry, where we can have our boxed lunch with a great view of the valley.

The last one hour of the Inca Quarry trail is even steeper but it will be worth the climb to the top. Upon arrival at the summit, one can celebrate and enjoy the stunning views of the sacred valley mountain range. The mysterious Inti Punku or Sun Gate is at the top of the hill and let you see the spectacular view of Veronica Mountain through the gate. You will have plenty of time to take pictures and also hold a small ceremony to the Mountain Gods.

Finally, we will take the same Inca Quarry trail route, enjoying the amazing sceneries on the way back to Ollantaytambo. We will return to Cusco in our private vehicle, arriving around 6 pm.

Best Memorable Trip Ever!! Our experience with Mapi Tour Peru was terrific, incredible and first rate. We worked with David to set up the tours and hikes of Sacred Valley, Pisaq, Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, other Inca sites near Cusco, Rainbow Mountain and Lake Titicaca. Every part of our tour was well thought out and memorable from cocktails at the San Cristobal Church belltower our first evening to lunch at the Hacienda Huayocari to the private home tour in Ollantaytambo and boat tour to the Uros and Taquile islands. We visited Peru during the Winter Solstice which is a very special time of year with many celebrations and much dancing in the streets. The accommodations chosen for us were first rate. We especially loved the Casa Andina in Cusco. Our tour guide, Catalina was a gem. She was my inspiration to keep hiking up the tall and narrow mountains and was so knowledgeable of the history of where we visited. I can't give enough great affirmations for this company. They were great to work with. Written July 18, 2023

Perfect Trip to Cusco & Machu Picchu! We had a fantastic experience using Mapi Tour. I reached out to a number of tour guides to help me plan my 1 week vacation to Lima/Cusco/Machu Picchu. I number of them where located in the United States so they seemed more like middlemen, but after interacting with David I felt the most comfortable working with him as a local tour operator with years of experience leading tours in Cusco and Machu Picchu. My wife and I did a tour of Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and added Rainbow mountain whilst we were in Cusco. David and his team - Karen, Freddy, and Eloy were very professional, friendly and supportive to our needs in making sure we were worry-free about our tours. I truly recommend using local tour guides and David if you are planning a trip to Peru. Written August 15, 2023
