AUSANGATE TREK THROUGH RAINBOW MOUNTAINS 5 DAYS  ITINERARY

DAY 1. – CUSCO – TINKI – UPIS

We’ll pick you up from your hotel at 9:00 am for a 3-hour trip to Tinki where we’ll have lunch. We’ll meet our horse wranglers who will load up the horses and mules with equipment, food, camp kitchen, etc. We’ll ascend for about four hours to our first campsite. Along the way, you’ll be amazed by the marvelous views as we get closer to Ausangate, including crystalline blue lakes, llamas, and alpacas. We’ll camp at the natural thermal springs at Upis (4450m/14,600ft) where we can relax and enjoy a warm, soothing bath for our tired muscles.

DAY 2. – UPIS – AUSANGATE COCHA

After a filling breakfast, we’ll continue our ascent to the first pass at Arapa (4750m/15,580ft). On the descent, we’ll have a great view of five greenish lakes (4450 masl). We’ll have our lunch close to lakes, enjoying the food and the excellent views. After a rest, we’ll ascend to another small pass, where if we’re lucky, we’ll be able to see Salkantay, the second highest mountain in the Cusco region. We then descend to the second camping spot, Ausangate Cocha (4650 masl).

DAY 3. – AUSANGATE COCHA – JAMPA

We continue shortly after breakfast. This section of our trek is the toughest as we have a steep ascent for 2 hours to the highest point of our five-day Ausangate Trek, Palomani Pass, (5200m/17,056ft). The panoramic view of Ausangate Mountain is breathtaking and most hikers are filled with feelings of awe and respect for this holy place. The trail descends to a beautiful valley with llamas, alpacas and vicuñas to reach Huchuy Finaya (4500 masl). After a well-deserved lunch and rest, we’ll continue hiking for 2 more hours to our campsite at Jampa (4650 masl).

DAY 4. – JAMPA – PACCHATA

After breakfast, we’ll ascend for about 3 hours to Jampa pass (5000 masl), the second highest in the area. From here, we’ll descend for an hour to see another series of lakes, where we’ll have lunch. This area is known for viewing wild birds such as geese, ducks, and gulls, as well as eagles and hawks. Later, we’ll continue to our campsite where we can soak in natural thermal baths at Pacchanta (4400 masl), while appreciating stunning views of the glaciers.

DAY 5. – PACCHATA – TINKI – CUSCO

On the last day of our Ausangate Trek Through Rainbow Mountains 5 days, we’ll begin with our last delicious breakfast before beginning our return hike of about 3 hours to Tinki. We’ll have a celebratory lunch in Tinki and say goodbye to your trekking team. After lunch, we take the van back to Cusco, and to your hotel.

WHAT TO BRING FOR THIS TREK

  • A rucksack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trip.
  • Original passport & International Student Identity Card (if applicable).
  • Rain gear or rain poncho.
  • Plastic ponchos can be bought in Cusco.
  • Waterproof trekking boots are recommended.
  • Sandals or flip-flop to relax your feet and for hot springs.
  • Warm clothes, including jacket, fleeces, and gloves.
  • Sleeping bag (it can be rented from us).
  • Torch/ Flashlight with extra batteries.
  • Camera, with extra batteries
  • Hat or cap to protect you from the sun and cold
  • Sun block minimum SPF 30 (it’s easy to burn at high elevation)
  • Insect repellent – minimum recommended 20% DEET
  • A roll of toilet paper.
  • Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, raw fruits, etc.
  • Canteen and water filter/tablets.
  • Your own medical kit with any special medications that you might require.
  • Small towel and wet wipes.
  • Bathing suit & sandals for the hot springs.
  • Cash for tipping staff and buy souvenirs.
  • Walking sticks or poles (it can be rented from us).
